Virginia Tech Incoming Class of 2029

If you're reading this, here is some advice for freshmen.

First, take a deep breath. You’re about to begin something new, and while that can feel overwhelming, it’s also full of possibility. College isn't just about academics, it's about growth, exploration, and figuring out who you are when no one else is telling you who to be.

Embrace the outdoors. Seriously, go for walks, study under a tree, hike if you’re near trails. Fresh air does wonders for your mental clarity and emotional balance. When things feel heavy or confusing, a change of scenery can reset your perspective in ways that indoor spaces never will.

Try new things, and maybe more importantly, don’t be afraid to do those things alone. Go to a club meeting even if no one else is going. Take a class that has nothing to do with your major. Eat lunch by yourself on the quad. It might feel awkward at first, but doing things alone builds confidence and often leads to unexpected friendships and memories.

Be you. Don’t waste energy trying to be the version of yourself you think others want. The people who are meant to be in your life will be drawn to your authenticity. And the sooner you show up as your full self, the more fulfilling your college experience will be.

Say yes to everything (at least at first). Go to the event, the game, the random gathering at someone's apartment. Be intentional about going out of your way to meet new people. The connections you make now could shape your future in ways you can't predict.

And through it all, be purposeful with your words, your actions, and your thoughts. College is fast, and it's easy to get swept up in the excitement of it all. When you pause to be intentional about what you say, how you treat people, and the way you speak to yourself, you’ll grow into someone you’re proud of.

You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to be open to learning, to growing, to failing, and to trying again.

So, if you’re reading this: welcome. This journey is yours to shape. Take care of yourself, stay curious, and don’t forget to look around every once in a while and appreciate how far you’ve come even in just a few weeks.

You’ve got this.
