If you’re reading this, trust your path and enjoy the journey.
As a college student, life can often feel overwhelming with the stress of maintaining a stellar GPA, excelling in extracurriculars, and engaging in meaningful experiences. We are at a point in our lives where it sometimes feels like every decision we make and every action we take can have a significant impact on our future careers and lives. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking you’re not doing enough, especially when comparing yourself to others who appear to have everything figured out. But the truth is, everyone is experiencing this journey for the first time, and you are not alone in your feelings.
As I wrap up my freshman year, I have learned a number of valuable lessons. One of the most important reminders I have come across is that the number one priority should be your health, including both your physical health and your mental health. Your well-being is not something that should be sacrificed for the sake of achievements. Taking care of yourself isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a necessity. Whether that means getting enough sleep, exercising, taking breaks when needed, or simply allowing yourself time to recharge, these small acts of self-care make all the difference.
Additionally, it is important to remind yourself that no one’s journey is the same. Everyone progresses at their own pace, and setbacks do not define your ability to succeed. This year alone, I have been ghosted by numerous research labs and rejected from numerous opportunities. However, although disappointing in the moment, each of these setbacks gave me the opportunity to learn something new, and I was able to find meaningful experiences that fill me with purpose. It is important to remind yourself that your journey is uniquely yours, and only you have the power to enjoy it. You only get to experience each moment once, so try your best to remain present instead of letting the pressure of what’s next take away from what’s happening now.
And lastly, it is so important to reach out for help when you need it. When stress and anxiety start to build up, do not hesitate to lean on the people around you for support. A simple conversation, a shared experience, or even just the reassurance that someone is there for you is so much more powerful than we realize. At the same time, being part of a strong community means offering that same support to others. A small act of kindness—checking in on a friend, offering words of encouragement, or simply being there to listen—can have a profound impact. As the marketing director of IfYoureReadingThis at UF, I have had the privilege of reading all the heartfelt letters shared by students and faculty. These letters serve as reminders that no one is alone in their struggles and that support is always within reach. The UF community is filled with compassion, understanding, and strength, and it truly shows in the way we uplift and care for one another.
To wrap this up, I want to remind you to stay present, take care of yourself, and trust that you are exactly where you need to be. Lean on your community and be a source of support for others. Remember that success isn’t just about achievements—it’s about growth, resilience, and finding joy along the way. Know that your path is uniquely yours, and most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy it along the way.
