Chancellor M.
If you’re reading this, let it out.
All the anger, the sadness, and the fear. Everything that has been brewing inside of you. My purpose in writing this letter is to let you know that you don’t need to let it build up. You don’t need to “thug” your feelings out because you think you need to. Take a moment for yourself. Scream, cry, whatever you need to do to process your pain, so that when it’s over, you can move with mental clarity.
Now, when I say let it out, I do NOT mean randomly crashing out and engaging in destructive behavior on this campus. It might feel good in the moment, but you LOWKEY just lost all your scholarships. And I guarantee someone’s going to record you and post you on IG reels the next morning. All of that would probably suck. That’s why I, the glorious goat Chancellor, will talk about healthy ways to release pent up emotions and negativity.
If you’re dealing with pent up emotions, one thing I recommend is to find groups/clubs that provide cathartic experiences. For example, this past fall, I joined the jujitsu club. This club not only provided engaging physical activity but served as an outlet that gave me mental clarity after the session. Now am I telling you to wrestle grown, sweaty men that put you in interestingly submissive positions? No, but you should explore activities around USC that relieve stress and clear your mind. And honestly, you don’t even need to really join anything. Simple activities that provide cathartic experience can be added to your daily routine. Below this letter, I will add a list of increasingly specific activities that could help you release your emotions.
1. Taking a walk outside
2. Working out/Running
3. Cooking
4. Simply hugging someone you care about
5. Going to social events/partying (do NOT rely on this)
6. Venting to your friends about your problems
7. Having a late-night walk while listening to music (around a safe area of course)
8. Having a late-night skateboarding session with friends.
9. Imagining yourself in a Tik Tok edit.
10. Talking to yourself out loud despite looking schizophrenic in public.
11. Going to a secluded area outside at night and screaming as loud as you can.
12. Dancing to Tik Tok audios in the bathroom immediately after getting out of the shower
13. Singing heartbreak drake songs in the shower with a JBL. (does more than you think)
14. Blasting 12 Strout Street in your headphones while lifting 50 lbs. above your weight in the gym (don’t actually do this)
That’s about it, remember to always put yourself and your peace first as you go throughout the semester. 😼
